From the Desk of Jennifer Slightham
CEO & Co-founder, 434 Marketing & Consulting, LLC
In 2011, my husband Dustin and I began our entrepreneurial journey by asking nearly 50 small business owners: “What keeps you up at night?” What is now a marketing agency grew organically from the answers we heard back time and time again—business owners were struggling to get seen by the right people in the right way. Thus, 434 was born.
434 has been an established marketing agency in Lynchburg, VA for well over a decade. We’ve adapted to market changes and adjusted our offering, but throughout each pivot, our motivation has been the same: We’ve always wanted to help our clients reach their goals from a strategic, holistic perspective. As one of our clients, you’ve been an integral part of our journey—and I’m excited to share where that journey is taking us next.
For years, both in and out of the CEO seat, I’ve had the unique perspective of watching our team do something I rarely see from your run-of-the-mill agency: offering business-level support that goes well beyond marketing.
We don’t just design websites or write copy. We walk alongside our clients, guiding them through strategic conversations. Above everything, we listen carefully so we truly understand the full picture. And then, we help them solve their actual problems, not just the surface-level service request.
Sometimes, that means recommending a tool that already exists to serve their needs instead of building a custom app. Other times, it means sitting with their leadership team to define what they do, why it matters, and how to communicate that in a way that moves people to action. It means looking at the entire customer journey—from the first impression to the final conversion and everything after—and asking: Is this actually working?
This kind of work? It’s consulting.
And it’s time we owned that.
Why We’re Embracing 434 Marketing & Consulting Now
The world of marketing is more complex than ever. Business owners and marketing leaders are being hit daily with messages about how to do everything better: stronger branding, more efficient processes, more automation, more content, more ROI. It’s overwhelming. And it creates what I believe is the most common challenge for growth-minded businesses today: decision paralysis.
Our job at 434 has always been to cut through that noise and help clients make better decisions, faster, by using strategy, structure, and data. We believe, as Marden, author and founder of SUCCESS, said, that a good system shortens the road to the goal.
By adding “Consulting” to our name, we’re simply bringing forward what’s already been true behind the scenes.
What Makes Our Approach Different?
At 434, our team approaches every engagement by looking holistically at the business because we believe sending the right message begins with having a deep understanding of your broader operational goals. Our Foundations Workshop process helps uncover what makes each client’s offering distinct. Then we use that insight to build not just better marketing, but more aligned systems, stronger positioning, and smarter growth paths.
So sure, we clarify brand messaging, but we do that after mapping ICPs, identifying gaps in marketing and operations, and implementing strategic automations that bridge the front-end and back-end of the business.
A Personal Note
I often make the statement, “I’m not a marketer,” when sitting in the room with a potential client, or in serving in my capacity as a board member for local nonprofits. While jarring to someone looking for marketing advice, I make that statement because it’s true.
I’m not a traditional marketing creative or even a marketing strategist. I lean heavily on a talented group of individuals for that. But what has always rung true for me is the importance of meeting people where they are.
My specialty is creating connections.
Connecting a product or service to their ideal client? That is marketing.
Listening long enough to truly understand the need, rather than simply selling a product? That’s the beginning of a long relationship built on trust.
And listening beyond the words to help to solve the core need? That’s where my heart lies in outwardly embracing our desire to support beyond implementing marketing tactics.
My greatest joy isn’t launching a beautiful new website or creative marketing campaign—it’s helping a team meet their goals by operating more efficiently, reaching the right clients, and creating systems to reduce the burnout that’s so common in small teams.
If we can help one team reclaim some breathing room, some clarity, and some confidence—we’ve done our job.
TL;DR: Our rebrand to 434 Marketing & Consulting reflects who we are at our core: a team of curious, forward-thinking strategists and operations-centered creatives who are committed to improving the systems we touch. We don’t believe in a set-it-and-forget-it approach. We partner with our clients in a deep way that’s adaptable and drives results. To our current clients: thank you for trusting us. To those just discovering us: welcome.
We’re excited for what’s ahead.
Warmly,
Jennifer Slightham
