One of my favorite business authors, Jim Collins, says it well: “Great vision without great people is irrelevant.” On Friday, a vision came to life as we launched Because Brand Co together and I am utterly convinced it would not have happened without you––some great people.
As I watched each of you work with precision on Friday, I had to reflect on the teams I have been apart of in the past. From championship hockey teams to corporate business teams, I have seen every color and flavor imaginable. With the great teams, there is a sense of family, belonging, and purpose. There is a rhythm that happens, and when it does, you can feel it and it empowers the collective.
On Friday, I not only felt it, I saw it.
Before leading us into this project, I knew our team had a strong culture and we had survived a few tests over the years. That said, I was not sure if this BHAG (another Collins reference, told ya I loved this guy) would break us or not. What I have come to learn is uncomfortable challenges can strengthen and unite the right team willing to accept them.
Together, we spent over 500 hours in six weeks, jumping into roles that were unnatural, challenging, and uncomfortable. Yes, there were times we shed tears as we ran tirelessly towards our launch date, but our culture and people really shined through, keeping us together and focused on our mission. On top of this, we stayed committed to our clients and maintained a healthy client workload– which was a significant priority.
Here is a list of some key milestones, just so we never forget the undertaking:
- We created a financial model and worked diligently to adhere to it with our decisions
- We built, not one, but four brands (messaging and brand guidelines included)
- We designed over ten custom designs for our products
- We developed a marketing plan and completed all the launch tasks we laid out (which included a website, spinning up all social accounts, crafting numerous pieces of content, a photoshoot, and several video shoots)
- We turned an airstream into a pop-up store
- We wrote SOPs and guidelines for the store
- We created logistics plans for events
- We produced a merchandising plan
- We identified and built relationships with manufactures for our goods
- We thought through the customer experience (like packaging, POS, and inventory management)
This list could go on and on, as we worked to solve numerous “problems” and launch Because Brand Co. At the end of the day, I want to express my sincere thanks and let you what an impression you made on me. It has been, and is, a great honor to serve each of you.
Leah–– you had a linchpin moment and I will never forget it. In fact, I learned something from it. Your actions and commitment throughout the project were more than I could have expected, from someone who already outputs so much. Thank you!
Bethanne–– you have a very honest way of lifting people’s spirits. Whether it was the late nights of tagging shirts, or as you engaged with people at our first event, you naturally repped the human part of our Brand by making others smile, and I am SO grateful for that.
Cory–– I know the timing of this thing was not easy for you, but whenever you were present I was grateful to have you there. Your ability to “run & gun,” but still make art is always impressive!
Josh–– We have worked together for so long and I am always thankful for your ability to take on new adventures with me. Your loyalty to this team shined through on the project. From the heated debate to ensure we had our spot at the event, to getting lead singers to make callouts form the stage, to late nights in the Airstream, you really showed up. Thank you!
Megan–– I remember our first meeting about Because Co. As we discussed it, your passion for the brand and what it could be, gave me the confidence in knowing we could build a business that was reflective of what our team believes in. You brought experience, wisdom, grace and trust to the table. Thank you!
Sierra–– In our first team meeting to announce the project, I remember your reaction and excitement to the news. That excitement never wore off. In fact, it catalyzed into three amazing brands– that literally touched my heart. You worked incredibly hard through vacation time, getting married, and a heavy workload. Thank you!
Jen–– I love doing life with my best friend and rock. And for us, business is a big part of life. Your ability to step forward, and back in different roles is uncanny. Your leadership during this project was inspirational to me and others. I love you.
We still have a long way to go, but it has truly been an honor to work with each of you. Thank you all for your commitment to our tribe and working to let our love be known.
P.S. Thank you to all the spouses and significant others of the team who helped get this done!
